american solider

A. What is the most powerful image from the pictures printed in the Denver Post over the three weeks they published images from the year of coverage? Why?

I think this is the most powerful and emotional photo because his face shows a lot of emotion and the sign in the background adds to it. Overall you can see he very scarred and uncomfortable bu he still power throughs.

B. How do the images work together to tell a story?
The images work together to show his story of getting enrolled and then going to boot camp and then going to the war. You can see his body transform and his emotions. You also see his relationships change throughout his draft.

C. How do the captions enhance the photographs?
The captions add more to the photos because it gives you an insight to what just happened and whats about to happen that help you understand the pictures more.

D. Summarize the story of Ian Fisher, based just on the captions.
Fisher goes off to war and is scared to see what happens and leave is family behind. But he starts getting stronger and developing friendships and relationships throughout the time. He finds love and its married and his draft was up.

E. For the photos in which Ian is the main subject of the photos, in what tense are the verbs usually written?
The verbs in the captions are usually written in present tense.

F. Break down the captions:

1. How many sentences are they on average? 4-5
2. Read the first sentence of a couple of them, what information do they provide? They provide more insight to what they're doing in the photo .
3. Read the second sentences of a couple of them, what information do they provide? What he's feeling
4. If there is a third sentence, what information does it provide? What happened after the photo.
5. Do any captions include a quote? Yes
6. Are there any that have four sentences? Ys

G. Why do you think it is possible to tell a complete story with just photos and captions?
Yes, I think so, picture books are a thing.

H. If you can create a story with just photos and captions, why bother writing a story at all?

You still need to write a story because you can go in more depth and give more quotes and hit topics the you can't aways photograph.

mural project

1. Think of at least three ideas you have about what your team could take photos of, that are in the same theme? Be creative, but be realistic. You will be shooting OFF campus, and every member of your team will need to be able to take similar photos or whatever you decide to do as a group.

1. People laughing

2. You will be using the school cameras or your own similar camera. You will need to shoot in Manual. What are three things you will have to think about when you are out shooting?

-blankwall
-close up on their face
-bowie student

3. Although we have always done this assignment as a paper/printed product. I am interested in being able to show off these images/creations/murals online. What are some ideas you have on how to get these pieces onto the internet?List three ideas and how you would suggest to your team this second product gets created.

You could put them on the Bowie website, hang them  in the school or put them in the school newspaper.

Our next assignments will be to get into groups and start planning this project. I will be assigning the groups. Your group will meet to talk about theme and plan the project - each group will have its own and we will print them here in this room. We will use butcher paper to mount the photos on. You will take all the photos and I will help print them here in class. Then we will hang the murals around campus. Below are a couple of examples from last year.

Africa and Abandoned theme parks

1. On your blog post your reactions to what you read and what you saw. How about 3-4 sentences.

My reaction was very calming and soothing especially since there in black and white. The rules of simplicity and lines were mainly used in these photos and it mad them look very appealing. I like the concept and the shading of the photos.

3. Describe it and tell me why it's your favorite.

I like the lighting from the clouds shining down. I also like the giraffes in the background because they add detail to the photo.

4. What rules of photography are evident in the photos you selected, be sure to explain the rule to me?

One rule of photography used in here is lines. Lines is when there are lines leading your eye to something or the use of lines can make the photo look more neat and clean which is what he used for the grass and giraffes.

5. What kind of camera and lens does he use and why is this important?

He uses a Pentax 67 and prefers to shoot up close to add more depth and feeling to his photos.

6. What is his reason for taking these photos?

He wants people to realize how bad they are hurting the animals and their environment.

7. What is his hope by taking these type of photos?

Nick Brandt hopes to get people to understand their actions and stop hurting the animals and the environment.

8. Find something he has to say about Africa, and post the quote on your blog.

"I want to capture the spirit of that particular creature. The frustrating thing is that with animals I have to wait. But I never lose my patience – I always consider it something of a minor miracle (and relief) when I get that moment."

Abandoned theme parks

1. Tell me which amusement park featured in the two articles that you would like to visit and take your camera along and what about that park made you want to go there. Write at least a paragraph.

Land of Oz, Beech Mountain, North Carolina, USA. I would want to go there because s a child I always loved wizard of oz. I think being able to go there now and see the movie come to life and now abandoned. There could be lots of cool angels and side by said caparisons I could do with the pictures I take to the actual movie.

2. Post one photo from that park. You may use the photos from the link, or you can google an entirely new photo. I would prefer to see a photo of the park in disrepair and not a photo of it when it was still operating.

3. Think of at least FIVE other unusual places you think would be of interest to photographers. List them.
abandoned buildings , churches, playgrounds, ghost towns, and schools

4. Use google or another search engine to research ONE of your five places and see if anyone has already started documenting that place. If you find that someone has already started - post at least one photo of their work.

5. Write a paragraph about why you think that it would be fun to document that location. Tell me what interests you about that place and what kind of photos you could expect to take there.
I think it would be fun because people know playgrounds as a happy place, full of laughter and fun. But it would be interesting and eery to see the other side and see a playground abandoned and over grown. I woke want to take photos of side by side comparison of a see playground and same panel of the playground full of children and then abandoned.

6. Tell me what it would take for you to go and take photos at your location. What would you need as far as equipment goes, travel plans, expenses you might encounter and what laws you would have to take into consideration to take photos at your spot.

I would need to find a playground and take two photos of it. One during the day full of kids and play and then on at night with it empty in the exact same spot. I would need a tripod, and i would need the weather to be bright during the day and then foggy and humid at night.

Husband photos of wife

1. What emotions did you feel as you worked your way through these images?

At first I felt relaxed and happy with the first two photos but as I made my way through the photos I got sad and got hit with disbelief and sympathy for people going through this.

2. The photographer said this: "These photographs do not define us, but they are us." What do you think about this comment now that you have looked at the photos?

I think it shows that those photos wasn't who she was. She wasn't cancer, she had cancer and unfortunately it took her life.

3. Do you think you could shoot photos like this if you were in this situation?

Yes, I would be able to because I think it would be a nice remembrance of her and how hard she battled it . Also people need to see those kind of photos cause it easy to make decisions based on statics but people need to see the real world and how decisions can really affect people.

4. If you could write Angelo a letter, what would you say to him?

I would say to keep strong and that even though she lost the battle she will always be there watching and protecting and you day you'll meet with her and happy again.

Great Black and white photographer pt. 3

1. What first caught my eye was the rule of third technique he used. As I did more research on the photographer I realized I really liked his kind of photos. They were usually of people and always about something meaningful that made you feel actual emotions instead of just looking at a building in black and white.

(In point of someone in the photo or in the scene where photo was taken)
I see people dying of hunger. I see babies struggling to survive and a mom struggling to provide. I see loss and hopelessness.

I smell the dust of the hot desert. I smell the dirt and body odor of villages who don't have running water for showers. I smell warn clothes that no how many times you wash it, it will always smell the same.

I hear kids playing in the background. I hear flies buzzing around, I hear a rattle of beads from people walking with the decorative village clothing.

I taste dirt and sand grinding between my teeth. Dust thats kicked up from kids playing or the wind somehow getting everywhere including mouths. In a little milk package, I taste milk thats warm and watered down.

I feel the dryness of my mouth making my throat burn. I feel the dirt between my toes and under my fingernails. I feel weak and tired. The hot desert sun soaking up all my energy and making me feel weighted and dragged down.

I think a power point would be the best way to display this photographers photos. A meaningful presentation to show awareness for people who have less for us. I could also add a biography for the photographer to add a more in depth background for the photos.

Aperture, Shutter speed, ISO

__________________________________________________________________________________________

1. What part of the body should we closely relate aperture? Pupils
2. Finish this sentence - the smaller the Aperture the higher the F-number, the higher the Aperture the lower the F-number
3. In your own words tell me how aperture impacts Depth of Field?

When the Aperture is higher you camera is going to be more focuses on one thing and the rest is blurry.

2) The three setting your camera has regarding shutter speed is "Shutter Priority", "Manual", and "Aperture Priority".

ISO 200
ISO 3200
ISO 6400

"The lower the ISO number, the less sensitive it is to the light, while a higher ISO number increases the sensitivity of your camera."

1. What are the advantages of shoot at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game? You can capture more details.
2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO?

When you have lots of light you should use the lowest setting so you can get the best quality.
3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO?

You should use high ISO number when you have dim lighting.

Academic Shoot reflection and critique

1. One challenge I encountered was that I wanted something original and not another one of those classic person reading a book picture.

2. I focused on lines and framing most.

3. One thing I wish I did better was hold the camera right and not titled which is a bad habit I have.

4. I would use the same lighting because I liked it and also the simplicity.

5. I think lines and rules of third is the easiest prompt to shoot.

6. I think merging and timing is the hardest to shoot.

7. I wasn't completely sure about the merging rule but after some reach I understand it and I think I will be using it more now.

academic shoot

1. rules of third
2. the book
3 yes it is clear
1. lines and balance
2.the chess match
3. yes but the use of lines make you look around but then get bored so you look back to the chess match.
1. I used framing in this to show only the lower part of the photo and only one face to not have distraction.
2. the phones
3. yes because I cropped it so the phones would be the main focus point.
1. I used simplicity and rules of third
2. The pencil and the face.
3. It is not that clear but I like it that way because in this picture its fun to look around and find other focal points.
1.  I used spacing
2. The main focus point is the book and the her face specifically her eyelashes.
4. Yes because you can tell theres more in the background but its blurred out.
1. I used simplicity, rules of third, and framing.
2. The focus point is his eyes leading to the book and then his hand.
3. Yes because those are some of the only things in the frames.
1. I used the rule of thirds.
2. Lukas is looking at the paper and listing to music
3. Sorta
4. I wish i put more of his head and back and less of guy sleeping.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

1. Some things I learned about manipulating images is that photoshop doesn't always mean editing model bodies or magazine covers. It could also mean lighting, red eyes, tones and other necessary technical things. Back in the 1800s, photographers could use photoshop to edit family members together to be in same pic if they couldn't originally able to be together. Photoshop could also be used to fit certain things into a certain size. For example, National Geographic in 1982. Photographer Gordon Gahen took a photo of the Great Pyramids of Giza and the editors photoshopped the pyramids to fit the cover page.

2. The philosophy of newspapers like the Washington Post and the New York times is that you can photoshop whatever you think is necessary as long as you don't change the coloring or tones of the original photo. This means you could photoshop bodies as long as you don't change their color.

3. I think some acceptable things you could do to alter an image is merge images, change lighting, change red eyes, smooth or focus to draw the viewer's attention or draw attention away from a point. I think blurring stretch marks or skin to go for the "flawless" effect is crossing the line. I think a good rule for this is, if you're editing something you couldn't have fixed with a camera such as a fat roll or a blemish then that is crossing the line.

4. I chose this photo because they photoshopped a POC into the photo to show the schools "diversity".When the school was asked about it they said they looked for a photo that showed their diversity but couldn't find one. I find this very wrong because obviously the schools problem is not having photos of diversity but rather never having diversity in general.

5. I think this photo is the least unethical because even though the photo is obviously of war and refugees which can make it a touchy subject, the photos are actions shots that were probably taken a second a part. They didn't change the meaning of the photo or anything that makes the photo morally wrong, they just changed something to make a photo better quality.

The Story

I chose this for best story because first I love this photo, the lighting, the cropping, the angle is perfect. But the reason why I chose it for this category is that she looks very happy and peaceful in it. You can tell she's at peace and in her own world.

I chose this photo for the category of Action because from the photo you can feel the drama and passion in this musical theater play.

I chose this photo for framing because It crops it perfectly. The face is light up and in the middle of the photo drawing attention to it. And it from there your hand follows his arm to his pen which is in the lines of third. Then the eye starts seeing the text written and the other faces in the photo.

2012:

My favorite photo was the person standing on tightrope with the sunset in back. I like this photo because you cannot see the face of the person and the coloring is great. I also like how he cropped it so the photo so the man is in the middle and not off center which my perfectionist self enjoys.

1. Where do you think you could take photos like the ones you look at today?----I could go to fine arts or a math teacher2. Whose classroom would you like to visit and take photos in?----Ms Hall3. What will you do, as the photographer, to get amazing photos like you look at today?
----Make sure lighting is always good and to get peoples face more.
